Ode is turning 18, and she wants to change her name

What’s the best catch phrase for the cover of our new magazine? Clearly, “for intelligent optimists” is now out. Here’s your change to contribute your ideas and suggestions in the comments section below! The winner will be invited to a special program in our San Francisco office including participating in–and contributing to!–our editorial staff meeting as desired.

The idea for Ode was born on a hill in southern France in the summer of 1994. This summer, Ode is turning 18. Legally she is becoming an adult. She will be old enough to vote and…. she is changing her name!

After 148 issues in Dutch—the first issue was published in the Netherlands in February 1995—and 82 issues in English, this will be the last magazine with the Ode logo on the cover. From the next issue—September/October—onward, Ode will be  The Optimist.

We, and most of you, love the word “Ode.” Yet we have always had to explain it. Odedoesn’t say who we are and what we are doing. The Optimist does, and that’s why it is a better fit for our mission. Ode was always about open-minded optimists and pioneers of the possible looking for solutions. Ode was a song of praise, a tribute to the people and ideas making our world a better place.

For many years Ode’s reporting was unusual in a world dominated by media only interested in whatever goes wrong. As a young girl Ode’s voice was soft, almost a gentle whisper. But the tide is changing. We see more and more seeds of promise and possibility sprouting. Optimism is rising in the farthest corners of the planet, albeit still only visible and audible to the ones with open eyes and ears. More and more of us are no longer waiting for institutions and procedures to fail. Instead we are acting, making and building. And so, as young lady Ode is becoming The Optimist, her voice is becoming stronger and more determined. She is bringing together a rapidly growing community that includes you and all the ones we have been waiting for.

Yes, we know that plain, unfiltered optimism can be a naïve and even dangerous strategy—remember our tagline: for intelligent optimists. However we also know that optimism is ultimately the only strategy for positive change. Optimism is a practice that requires effort and attention. It is a meaningful quest as science keeps confirming that optimism generates more health, happiness and creativity and therefore contributes to a better world.

The Optimist will be (y)our companion on this journey. It will be an inspiring and rich adventure as The Optimist will share stories in many different ways; in a new and even more beautiful—yes, wait and see—magazine as well as through (online) events and courses. Stories will come alive in a collaborative and interactive experience. New realities will be created. We are looking forward to traveling with you.

Optimistically yours,

Just once more,

The Ode team

  153. David Holmstrom says:

ODE was (is) a powerful name, never misunderstood by me . . . . and because you are changing to Optimist, surely you have heard of the organization, OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL, with a quarterly publication named OPTIMIST. In addition to selecting a “new” name that is already in use by another publication, you sort of blew an opportunity to increase interest from your enthusiastic readers to have them suggest a new name for ODE. I was once involved in renaming a publication, and by inviting the readers to suggest new names, a wonderful dialogue ensued that led to great ideas for articles as well as hearing from readers what was liked and disliked in subject matter. I urge you, if the name
OPTIMIST is not yet cast in stone, to publicly welcome submissions for new names. Here’s some from me: PONDER, UNFOLD, MAXIMUM, INTERFACE, INTERLINK, INTERPLAY, LAURELS, EXPANSE, CONFIRM and there are so many more that convey a more appropriate sense of engaging readers in new ideas, organizations, and extraordinary people. Whatever you do I wish you
    continued, wonderful success. David Holmstrom

  209. First, thank you so much for opening up this discussion to your readers!

Building on David Holstrom’s 6/13 comments, I wish you had renamed the magazine “The Intelligent Optimist” because it better defines your audience and maintains greater continuity between old and new names.

    My tagline ideas are:
    …Pioneers of the Possible

…Creating Solutions for a Better World

  210. Greg White says:

Here’s a suggested TAGLINE, if you go with The Optimist…
    FOR POSITIVE THINKERS & DOERS.

However…I think it’s a mistake to lose the line FOR INTELLIGENT OPTIMISTS.
It identifies quickly who your target readers are: Thinkers who are optimistic.
I’d like to suggest a different path forward. Change the magazine’s name to
POSITIVELY…an adverb that describes how your readers and the subjects of your
articles approach LIFE! (How they think and how they LIVE). With this title for the publication, the tagline could remain FOR INTELLIGENT OPTIMISTS, providing some continuity for those looking for your publication. Good luck with this new venture. Greg

  303. Michel says:

    Don’t have a tagline.

You could say “The Optimist” is both your name, tagline and your clarion call to a world besieged by negativity.

The name “The Optimist” allows each person to connect with your story in their own way. The desire to try and “capture” the quicksilver of purpose within the artifice 3-5 words, while time honoured, is also a waste of opportunity to paint a bigger more vibrant picture across the breadth of people, stories and endeavours that can will and should change with time.

  304. Lisa Evans says:

Oh, there are so many delicious ideas here! How will you decide? Here’s my contribution…

It implies innovation and pioneering. “Discover” is a proven-effective marketing word.

In many ways, we are continually being indoctrinated with what the powers that be wish us to believe… these thoughts and ideas are put in the inbox of our minds, but until we begin, as we are, to reject the status quo, what needs to be, will not be, therefore, thinking outside the inbox asks us to think beyond what is or what others want it to be, to what is possible when allowing our spirits to be open to the possibilities beyond our human assumptions and limitations to trust the divine in ourselves to lead us where we need to go and who we need to be as planet earth and children of God.

    http://www.optimist.org/magazine/theoptimist-summer2012/index.html

The people behind this magazine even hold a yearly conference and have a creed:

    The Optimist Creed

    Promise Yourself …
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

You may want to re-think this name change.

I love your magazine! I originally picked up the magazine because it said it was for “intelligent optimists”, which I thought was both funny, intriguing and smart. I understand that the name Ode might not convey enough of what the magazine contains, but I’m sorry to lose that tag line. Here are some ideas that I’ve had for a new one. Thanks for all your work!!

    THE OPTIMIST
A big magazine for a small planet

    THE OPTIMIST
Bringing you a world of good

    THE OPTIMIST
    A positive change

    THE OPTIMIST
    A global perspective

    THE OPTIMIST

    THE OPTIMIST
    Intelligent inspiration

  453. Richard Austin says:

  454. Hi again, got a new one: The Optimist or Optimist Times, where ideas meet opportunity

  455. Gary S says:

I suggest a different tagline each issue, indefinitely, or until one stands out as “the one.”

  456. Gertrude van Voorden says:

Finding the new name you have chosen totally inappropriate in these dire times of our world. Childish, seemingly related to the LOA theories of the Secret, enforced pretended illusionary happiness, for western people to escape to, enabling them to remain in denial, to ignore the deep suffering of many peoples in the world.

One thing we know is we need change. A name implying that would hold space for people with differing choices, ideas, paths etc. to feel included. When going through with naming your magazine, i wish you luck, but notify you, that you will have lost me. Used to be a member for many years, when my budget still allowed it, when Ode was just locally dutch and i preferred it. Was so proud of a magazine like that being birthed in our little country.

As a tagline, i would suggest something to do with inspiration. For to uphold change, to go the length of these times of transformation, being confronted with many events that are or resemble actual, live evil, one needs positive inspiration that rings true. So not the false motivation seminars, that got so tiring and boring in the end. Selfish children wanting to create Ferrari’s not giving a care in the world, about its effect on the environment. Does Ode still acknowledge the footprint of the US is far too large to be sustainable, other peoples paying for it?
With sorrow i will carry you to a grave in my heart, having to acknowledge the Optimist is not for me. Even though an Original print of Esscher’s meeting of the Optimist and the Pessimist was hanging in my living room for many years. Just listening to Hazel Courteney’s seminar about total Braincoherence, i found words to describe my intentional search.

  457. Gertrude van Voorden says:

ForChange, committed to cocreate an optimal functional society.

  458. THE OPTIMIST
Cutting Edge Ideas in a Quickly Evolving World

  459. Fenn Duncan says:

    An ode to unquenchable spirit
An ode to humanity’s unquenchable spirit
    An ode to spirited intelligence
    An ode to good news
    Intelligent good news
    good news for intelligent people

  460. Hilary Stookey says:

A critical decision, to change Ode’s name! You’ve straddled several worlds at present (as can be clearly seen from these tagline ideas) and you don’t want to narrow that vision. I say get rid of that term “intelligent” which is elitist and exclusionary. Don’t consider defining the magazine as [just] for Optimists, or Realists, etc. You want to encourage people who are not yet positive thinkers to pick the magazine up and read it – but you will have excluded them already with that tagline. It’s vital for Ode’s growth (?purpose) to not scare people off: you’re trying to make the world better. It should appeal to as many people as possible. So for me, a generalized message is the way to go. There are many of those suggested. eg:
Ideas for Abundant Living/Transforming the Future/The Global Citizen’s Voice/Where possibilities flourish [very nice: David Virden]/Cultivating Hope/Positive thinking for positive change/Creating New Realities/ Choosing the future/An Ode to positive thought [very nice]/Serious Good News/Celebrating the possibility/Ode to Life!/For all that is possible/supporting change, one word at a time/Global Positivism/The Power of Yes/Advancing Positive Change/envisioning a better way; making it happen [nice]/Optimizing our future now/An ode to the good/Creating a Sustainable Future Together/Expanding possibility/For A Healthy Planet/Actively making a better world/Because A Better World Starts With Positive Ideas/Striving for a better world/generating a better world/Inspiring Today for Tomorrow’s World/Everything is possible/Ode to a Better World [nice&simple]/Ode to Possibilities/Inspiring Positive Change [nice]/Strategies for Positive Change [v.nice]/Empowering the Positive/ Where innovation meets inspiration [v.nice]/Changing today for a better tomorrow/Discover What’s Possible [nice]

    Particularly like:
The Practical Optimist (Bea Lothrop) for a great alternative title to the magazine
    and:
Ode to making a difference (Kathie McCabe) for a tagline

These allow each person to connect with your magazine in their own way – as Gertrude van Voorden* succinctly puts it: ‘[they] would hold space for people with differing choices, ideas, paths, etc. to feel included.’

Can’t say I don’t have a few tagline ideas to add to your list, although with so many responses, these may already have been suggested !…
    “Encouraging the power of ideas”
“The promise of possibilities in a changing world”
“Helping the world with practical optimism”
    “A source for positive changes”
“Positive choices for a changing world”

( *I also agree with her comment “one needs positive inspiration that rings true. So not the false motivation seminars”. Ode, as I said, straddles many types of reader, so its balance is important for survival or to widen readership.)

Sorry this is a bit long ! But changing ODE’s name and giving it a new tagline is dramatic. Glad you’ve included us all in the process!
