Ethology is fascinating, and this article about canine behavior is no exception. I’m always amazed, though, that researchers overlook basic biology in their quest for answers. A dog’s sense of smell is many times more acute than our own. Concluding that they can “count” because they “know” that only ten of eleven treats that have been removed from behind a screen, and know there’s one more to go, is not the only possible answer to this test. It’s more likely they *smell* the remaining treat!

I find it hard to believe that dogs equate to a 2 year old’s intelligence – I doubt very much that anyone who has a guide dog would trade their dog for a 2 year old child! They also have abilities way beyond ours, for example, they know when their person is on their way home 15 minutes ahead of time -proven by in home cameras,(and my neighbours!) even when that person has a varied schedule not to mention their awareness when an earthquake is on the way, I live in California and have certainly seen that happen very often!
One of my dogs is so clever that if it is raining hard, rather than go outside to pee she swings her butt out the door to keep her body dry while she squats!
