Spirituality & Practice sends a delightful weekly enewsletter. Often they include: A Cue to Try. This is usually a practical method of spiritual practice, which is, of course, what spiritual practice is for!
I particularly liked this one:
When I see a map of the world, I am reminded of the importance of working for peace in our time.
Believe it or not, I am always reminded of this when I go to the dentist. His waiting room boasts a huge map of the world. Going to the dentist hasn’t usually been a peaceful experience for me. In fact, I’ve had some of my worst experiences ever at the dentist, but ever since I started going to this one with the map of the world on the wall, I’ve prayed for peace as I’m waiting.
Wouldn’t you know it? I have had better experiences at the dentist ever since.
I know that wasn’t his intention but it has had a wonderful effect on me. Truthfully, praying for peace—whatever the trigger—has a good effect on any situation. This is one of the many reasons that I pray for peace.
I suppose you could say that praying for peace is my default prayer. It never leads me wrong.
